Brief statement of the Adult Literacy Rural Trust’s objectives: We are a non-profit, voluntary organisation teaching reading and writing to isolated, rural adults, or other isolated adults, who missed out on these skills at school. How we work: Our students work with a volunteer literacy coach 3 - 5 days a week for 30 minutes a day. We think a little bit every day is more effective than one lesson a week. There is more of an overflow effect into their daily lives. They are able to double their speed of learning by practising new skills using our online practice software, which their volunteer coach can monitor. They are often able to use library or school computers to access the internet if they don’t have a computer at home. Of particular importance to the Adult Literacy Rural Trust is that we do not duplicate other services, and only provide our service to those who are isolated or living rurally and who, therefore, cannot access other adult literacy services.
